The Idiot’s Guide to Creating Content for Social Media

Posting for your business can feel like climbing Everest… blindfolded… in flip-flops. But here’s the secret: it’s not actually that hard. Most of the time, you’re just overthinking it. So, let’s simplify things and make content creation for your business straightforward, fun, and, dare I say, slightly addictive.
Step 1: Get a Plan (But Don’t Go Mad)
The first step to stress-free social media is planning. I’m not saying you need a three year content calendar (that’s just asking for trouble), but you do need some structure. My top tip? Don’t plan more than a month in advance. This keeps your content relevant, timely, and aligned with what your business is actually doing.

Start by figuring out:
How often you’re going to post
Which platforms you’re posting on
What types of content you’re sharing (reels, carousels, images, stories)
Once you’ve got this in place, posting becomes a lot less intimidating.
Step 2: Prep Your Content Like a Pro
Now comes the fun part - actually creating your content. Whether it’s filming a video or snapping photos, preparation is key. Here’s a breakdown of my go-to setup:
Filming Videos
Think in multiples: Aim to get at least three posts from one video. Mix it up with talking head clips, b-roll footage, tours, or mini how-tos. This saves time and maximises the content you already have.
Lighting: Good lighting is everything. You don’t need to bankrupt yourself, Amazon has brilliant, affordable ring lights and soft boxes. Even a small setup can make a huge difference.
Camera & stability: If you’re using a camera or phone, a tripod is essential for steady shots. For moving footage, consider a gimbal, it’s like magic for smooth video.
Phone settings: Always use the back camera for the best quality; it’s a million times better than your selfie camera.
Sound matters: Clear audio separates “professional” from “amateurish.” Even a budget mic can make a world of difference.
Taking Photos
Natural light is your friend: Position yourself or your product near a window for flattering, bright shots. Avoid harsh midday sun, it’s not a good look for anyone.

Angles & composition: Don’t just stand there and snap. Try different angles, heights, and framing. Rule of thumb: if it looks good to your eye, it’ll look good on social.
Background check: Keep it tidy or themed to your brand. A cluttered background distracts from your message.
Step 3: Batch Create & Schedule
Once your content is ready, batch-create your posts. This is where planning pays off. Spend a few hours filming or photographing, then schedule your posts using tools like Meta Business Suite, Later, or Buffer. Scheduling keeps your business visible, consistent, and stress free.
Step 4: Keep It Fun

Social media isn’t a chore, it’s a chance to show the personality behind your business. Be real, be funny, and don’t be afraid to try new things. Even if a post doesn’t perform perfectly, you’ve learned something. And remember: consistency beats perfection every time.
